The Bains MTB trails are located near Wellington, in the heart of the winelands, about 80km north east of Cape Town. The trails start from the picturesque Welvanpas farm and are set amongst spectacular mountain scenery below Bainskloof Pass. The mapped area includes easy trails through vineyards and orange groves as well as top quality single track trails that meander through the rugged and rocky open fynbos.
There are 3 signposted biking routes, graded to cater for all abilities. The Blue, White and Yellow routes are described in detail in the guide. The map clearly shows the White and Blue routes and covers the Yellow route with a less detailed insert.

The Bains MTB Trails, designed and built by Pieter Van Wyk, consist of 3 superb top quality routes. This is not a bike park or trail centre but a beautiful valley with excellent fast flowing trails along the Kromme River and surrounding hills. The routes are marked by coloured posts and meander through vineyards, orange groves, forests and pristine fynbos. Entry to the Welvanpas Trails is through the farm at Welvanpas and a permit is required. This can be purchased from the Die ou Meul coffee shop at the farm, where delicious cakes, muffins and sandwiches are also available.

The routes described here are best done clockwise as shown on the map. The trails are waymarked with coloured posts.
Blue. 15km, 1.5 – 2 hrs bike or 4hr hike. Moderate. A mix of 4WD trails and single track with some rock and stream crossings. Head out of the car park by the orange grove and follow the route marked by blue signs and as shown on the map. The highest point is 360m at about 7km into the trail.
White Route. 29km 2.5 – 3.5hrs bike. Technically and physically intermediate to hard. This is a great mountain bike ride, with half of the route on high quality single track.
Follow the White Route out of the car park in the same direction as the Blue route and by the orange grove.
Yellow MTB Route. 17km 2 -2.5 hrs bike. Shorter than the White Route this is no less difficult due to the climb to 660m in the Hawekwa Mountains to the south of Bainskloof Pass. This route requires a good level of fitness. The trail consists of rocky jeep tracks, logging roads ad flowing single track and is marked with yellow signs. Start by back-tracking along the road past the coffee shop and turning left in to the field and paralleling the road. Where he road bends to the right the yellow route turns left and starts to climb to the south east. The map below……..
