Orange Route. 7km, 1hr bike or 2hr hike. Technically and physically moderate. From the Kloof Neck car park head east up Tafelberg Road towards Table Mountain. About 1km past the Cable Car Station turn left onto a rough road and descend quickly to the next junction. Keep to the left and proceed along a rocky trail towards the west. Just below the cable car station continue….
Red Route. 17km 2hr bike or 4 hr hike. The red route describes a technical and physical route across the length of the park. Follow the Orange Route as described above from Kloof Neck car park along Tafelberg Road. The route winds around the base of Table Mountain, at one point passing a small pool that in certain conditions is very refreshing to swim in. At the end of the tarmac descend on the gravel to the contour path and a junction coming in from the left. To extend the ride it is possible to continue straight on and climb to the King’s Blockhouse on Mowbray Ridge at 436m.
At the junction turn left and descend quickly to a T junction. Turn left again and head west, taking 2 further left turns near the quarries and straight on above the Disa Towers.
Before the forest take….
Getting There. There are numerous entry points into Deer Park marked clearly on the map. From the city side the entry points are Derry Road and Peppertree in Devil’s Peak Estate plus Deer Park East in Vredehoek. Further west there are entrances at Molteno Road in Oranjezicht and Glencoe in Higgovale. To reach these entrances involves a steep road climb out of the city, followed by further climbing once into the park.
The easiest way to join the trails is from Tafelberg Road that runs along the top of the park. There is also a way through from near the University of Cape Town on Rhodes Drive. This is either through the Groote Schuur Estate or past the Rhodes Memorial, then on to the trail that runs near to the Prince of Wales Blockhouse.
