Tokai Plantation and Silvermine offers some of the best biking and hiking in the Cape Peninsula. Just 20km south of Cape Town it is one of the most popular destinations for the mountain biking enthusiast.
There is something to suit every ability. Forest roads and easy trails for the beginner, and superb high quality single track for the more ambitious. For the extremely fit there are mountains to climb and for the downhill expert there are steep and fast descents.
Use this map and guide to plan a great day out in either Tokai or Silvermine. Follow one of the 3 described routes or just ride on your own using the map as your guide.

Yellow Route. 12km 2hrs. Technically and physically moderate. From the entrance gate at Tokai Arboretum head along the forest road and climb steadily to the T junction at Level 3. Turn right and continue north taking the left fork after about 1km. Climb to another T junction and turn left along the Level 4 forest road. At the next fork keep straight on for a further 200m and look out for the single track on the left. Now the fun begins!
This section of single track is called Boulders and descends gently though beautiful pine forest and past huge rocks. The going is mainly easy although a little rocky in places. The trail soon meets the forest road so turn left and re-climb the ground covered earlier. This time at the level 4 road turn right and take the single track on the right a further 100m north. Descend on Mamba, Boomslang, Snakes Eyes and Rinkhals. At the bottom turn right and head 1km south……
Red Route. 22km 4hrs. Technically and physically hard.
The red route describes a physically tough mountain bike ride to the Constantiaberg Summit. Head out of the Arboretum car park following the yellow route as described above. After Boulders climb to the Level 4 road for the second time and continue straight on. At Vlakkenberg take the left fork and climb to the summit of Constantiaberg at 928m…..
Orange. 7 km circular route at Silvermine, 2hr bike 3hr hike. Intermediate. From the car park head north on the MTB trail, then turn left at the T junction and head up on the gravel track. Ahead lies some steep switchbacks and for those that change there minds at this point there is a cut down to the dam. At a fork in the trail head left and continue the steady climb towards Noordhoek Peak, forking right and climbing to the beacon and spectacular views at the summit…..
