This map and guide describes three great routes in the South Downs National Park between Lewes and the A23 Brighton Road. The map has all of the bike legal trails clearly marked and can be used by bikers and hikers alike. Two long routes both start and finish at railway stations, encouraging the use of public transport. A short easy route is described from Stanmer Park accessible by bus from Brighton and can be joined from Falmer railway station near Sussex University. The South Downs Way is shown from Pyecombe to just south of Lewes.

Red Route. Hard. 18km, 3hr bike or 5hr hike. The starting point is the railway station in Hassocks. The route to Clayton is shown on the left. Take the small track that follows the railway line south. Be very careful at the A273 and turn left along the Plumpton Road. After a short distance turn right and climb steeply on the trail to the Clayton Windmills. Now follow the South Downs Way along the ridge to Ditchling Beacon…..

Yellow Route. Easy. 9km, 2hr bike or 3 hr hike. Start from the car parks in Stanmer Park, heading on the road south out of the park. Turn left and follow the cycle path east past Sussex University and through Falmer. Turn left and climb steadily through Balmer Farm to Buckland Bank. Turn left again and continue to Ridge Farm. Now turn right and head north turning left at St Mary’s Farm and go over Stanmer Down. Turn left in the valley and head back to Stanmer for some well earned refreshments at the Stanmer Park Tea Rooms.
