From Findon to the Adur valley is one of the most popular areas in the South Downs National Park.
Three great suggested routes are suitable for both beginners and experts alike. An easy route describes a circuit around Findon past the Cissbury Ring. A second route starts at Shoreham and runs past the spectacular Lancing College. The long route includes the atmospheric hill forts at Cissbury and Chanctonbury Rings. Use this map to explore, or just follow one of the 3 suggested routes described in this guide.

Yellow Route. Easy. 10km, 1-2hr bike or 2hr hike. This is an ideal beginners route around the village of Findon past the Cissbury Ring.
Start at the car park on the Gallops just off the A24 in Findon Valley. Head north out of the car park along a single track and join a small access road. Turn left up an old bridleway through a narrow wood to the top of the downs above Longfurlong….
Orange Route. Intermediate. 12km, 2 hr bike or 3hr hike.
Starting in Shoreham-by-Sea head out along the east bank of the River Adur on the Downs Link Cycle Trail. This is a long distance path that links to the North Downs at St Martha’s Hill in Surrey. (See Trailmaps Surrey Hills Maps).
Cross the River Adur at Botolphs and join the South Downs Way. Now follow this up Annington Hill to the minor road that cuts through the middle of the area. Turn left through the small car park and out across the field heading south towards Steep Down….
Red Route. Hard. 20km, 3hr bike or 5 hr hike. A long circular route through the heart of the downs and past the Bronze Age Fort at Chanctonbury Ring and Iron Age Fort at Cissbury Ring.
Start the ride from the car park on the minor road in the middle of the area. Either park here or join the route from the orange route described above (adds another 12 km to the ride if starting from Shoreham).
Head northwest along the South Downs Way (SDW) past New Hill Barn all the way to Chanctonbury Ring. Stop here to soak up the atmosphere…..
Hot Tip. Take the train to Shoreham-by-Sea. Head north along the Downs Link and using the maps from the Trailmaps South Downs Series enjoy a fantastic day out in the South Downs National Park. Return via any of the south coast railway stations. See www.southernrailway.com
