This map of Mugu covers the western most park area of the Santa Monica Mountains. It includes the first class mountain biking trails of Big Sycamore Canyon and the hiking only area of La Jolla Valley. Also included is the historic Rancho Sierra Vista Satwiwa and the single track Los Robles Trail. Three great routes are marked clearly on the map and described in detail. This area is particularly suited to those new to biking and hiking as the terrain is more forgiving and mostly less steep than the rest of the maps in the Trailmaps Santa Monica Series.

Yellow Route. Easy. 3 miles, 1hr bike or 90 minute hike. This is an ideal beginners route through Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa.
Start at the south end of Wendy Drive on Potrero Road. There is plenty of street parking here and it is easily accessible from the 101 Ventura Freeway (exit Wendy Drive). Head south, downhill a short distance and at the bottom turn right onto a single track. Follow this, keeping right at junctions to the service road. Turn left on the tarmac and proceed to the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center. This is a great place to stop and view the exhibits and take refreshments. Hikers can head around the Satwiwa loop trail……
Orange Route. Intermediate. Big Sycamore Canyon and Overlook Fire Road. 16 miles, 3 hour bike or 5hr hike.
This is widely considered to be one of the best rides in the Santa Monicas, quite long with moderate climbing and mostly on good quality trails, with plenty of short cut options.
Start from the parking lot just off the Pacific coast Highway at Big Sycamore Canyon……
a Jolla Valley Trails. This superb area has some excellent hiking trails but is out of bounds to mountain bikes. Only La Jolla Valley Fire road (access from top of Hell Hill) is rideable.
Red Route. Hard. 8 miles, 2hr bike or 3 hr hike. A short but tough circular route on the Los Robles Trail.
Park at the end of Moorpark Road and head west along the trail. Keep right at the Y junction then left onto Los Robles single track. This is an excellent winding trail that climbs for a couple of miles and will challenge even the fittest. Cross the private road……
