Deeside Way from Banchory to Aboyne

West of Banchory the Deeside Way diverges from the route of the The Old Royal Deeside Railway Line. For part of the way the trail runs on the south side of the River Dee, then crosses back over to the north side at Potarch bridge and parallels the main road into Kincardine O’Neil.
The trail from Kincardine O’Neil to Aboyne has not been completed yet, but there is a proposed route. The map shows the possible route plus the alternate paths between Aboyne and Kincardine O’Neil.

The Deeside Way. The map and guide describe the completed sections and likely future route of the Deeside Way, between Banchory and Aboyne. The routes are one way only so either return the same way (double the distances shown), use public transport, or arrange for a lift, to return to the start.
The Deeside Way. Banchory to Shooting Greens. 17km, 2 hr bike or 3 hour hike. This section is not waymarked but the likely route is shown with green dashes on the map. Head out of Banchory to the south over the Bridge of Dee and follow the road around to the left. Take the right turn towards Scolty and Blackhall forest.
Beware of traffic on the narrow road and turn left then right into Blackhall Forest and the Scolty Car Park. There are many other trails through the forest and the route marked on the map marks the easiest option…….

The Deeside Way. Shooting Greens to Kincardine O’Neil. 17km, 2 hr bike or 3 hour hike. The Shooting Greens car park is the start of an excellent section of single track that winds its way through open forest and out onto grazing land. There are terrific views to the west, towards Potarch Bridge and the distant hills beyond. The trail is fast and mostly downhill all the way to the Potarch car park and hotel.
Cross over Potarch Bridge and follow the track west from the small car park on the north bank of the river. This is an excellent high quality trail, along the edge of fields on the south side of the A93 trunk road. With terrific views of the river, it is mainly easy going. There is one short sharp steep climb that cyclists may have to push up. The trail ends in the small village of Kincardine O’Neil where there is a shop and hotel. The Royal Deeside Railway Line did not come through Kincardine so perhaps that is why it is now small and unspoilt.

The Deeside Way. Kincardine O’Neil to Aboyne. 17km, 2 hr bike or 3 hour hike. This section is not waymarked but a possible route, suitable for biking and hiking, is shown on the map. Head west out of Kincardine O’Neil taking great care along the side of the busy A93 trunk road. Turn right onto Pitmurchie Road and follow this around to the left then onto the small trail that runs behind the houses. This now continues northwest over the hill to the Deeside Activity Centre.
Turn left at the road and then after about 600m turn right towards the Old Dess Station. The station buildings are now a home and there are private signs. The entrance to the Old Railway Line track is between the garage and the old station platform. Remember the land access rights (see opposite) and please act responsibly…….
