Probably the best area for recreation and mountain biking in the San Gabriel Mountains can be found at Chilao and the Charlton Flats. The area is covered in great trails and has excellent camping and picnic facilities. Less than an hours drive from the 210 Freeway at La Canada, this area is a gem.
Try some of these suggested routes or just adventure on your own, using this map and the routes as a guide.

The following is an extracts from the Chilao Map :-

Red Route – 3 Peaks Loop – Hard (19 miles- 4hrs biking)
This describes a very difficult and strenuous mtb ride.
Follow the Mt. Mooney (yellow) and Chilao (orange) route to the Forest Service Memorial as described opposite. Continue on the forest road….No matter how tired you are make the effort to go to the Vetter Mountain Lookout. It is a long hard climb from Charlton Flat but the reward is a fantastic view followed by a great single track descent back to the picnic site.
