The 17km of MTB trails at Carbisdale and Balblair were designed by Rik Allsop, and are supported by the Kyle of Sutherland Initiative and Forestry Commission Scotland.
Carbisdale Castle sits at the start of the easier trails on the west side of the Kyle of Sutherland. Balblair, with its more expansive single track network and stunning views, lies opposite. The areas are linked by a footbridge across the Kyle.
With some of the best scenery in Scotland and a high quality trail network, this area is well worth exploring. Use this map and guide to plan some great rides in this top quality area .

MTB Trails
The MTB trails are split into 2 very different and distinct areas. Carbisdale is more suited to a short ride with easier trails. Balblair has a long demanding black trail that will challenge the most experienced, but there are also some easier rides too. Rik Allsop has created some great trails with plenty of choice and a series of rides where the technical riding are of the highest quality….

Facilities The jewel in the crown of the Scottish Youth Hostel Association (SYHA), can be found right at the start of the trails, at Carbisdale Castle. It was built for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland and bequeathed to the SYHA in 1945. The castle offers accommodation, a great coffee shop and bike rental. It is closed from Nov-Mar.
